Mick Lally Race Report

There was a good turnout at Batterstown on Saturday for the Mick Lally Memorial road race. 160 cyclists from Junior to Vet took to the roads on a sunny but breezy morning. The race is held as a memorial to Mick Lally, the head of the popular Lally cycling dynasty. His sons Tony, Jimmy and Sean and grandson Connor all raced at the highest level in and for the country (Tony having raced at the Moscow Olympics). Jimmy was there today racing in the Vets but showing the C's and juniors how to do it.

Due to popularity and increased demand for the S3 and Vet categories it a second separate race was held on the same course. The Dublin Wheelers Grand Prix attracted 100 riders. With a group this big and on a windy day it was hard for any break to stay away too long but last years winner of the Mick Lally, Anto Moran was here to defend his title and take home a trophy. He broke with Kirwan of Lucan on the 2nd of 3 laps and managed to stay away until the finish. His team-mate Bernie followed home in 3rd with yet another Vet Eddie Lynch taking 4th spot.

The Mick Lallly Memorial itself was made up of S1 and S2 riders. Due to the wind on the day it was decided to make this a 4 lap 71km race with the 60 S1/S2's going off together. The pace was fast from the gun, 12 riders attacked early on and managed to get a small gap on the bunch by the middle of lap 1. They worked hard and increased their gap to a couple of minutes, losing 4 riders along the way. The 8 riders stayed away to the finish with Scott McDonald and Sean Lacey sprinting away from the break in the run up to the line. Scott outsprinted Sean whose team mate Derek Burke followed in for 3rd spot.
On presentation of the trophy by Jimmy Lally, Scott was quick to point out that his name was already on the perpetual trophy as race winner back in 1992. 15 years on but still just as fast.

The 2 races were a great success. With so many turning up on a Saturday morning at the start of the race season, the club were able to give out 20 prizes in all which is good considering the race is as of yet unsponsored. The race is usually held in the Phoenix Park but due to the planned road layout changes it was decided to change the venue this year. The organisers are already looking forward to 2008 when they hope to make it a bigger and better event.

Yours in Sport,

Wes Murphy

MicK Lally Race More Details........

This race honours Mick Lally. Although he never raced, he gave three sons to the sport who commissioned the trophies in his honour. He supported them and was so proud to watch as they all represented Ireland at international level. The youngest son, Tony won the Tour of Ireland and represented Ireland at the Moscow Olympics in 1980. Two Lallys, Seán (McNally Swords CC) and Jimmy (Dublin Wheelers CC) (both pictured below) are still racing competitively in the Veterans races and will be competing on March 10.

Also taking part will be last year's winner Anthony Moran (Ravens) and previous winners Ciaran Kelly and Colm Bracken, so a close race is anticipated. A large turn out is expected, as it is the only race on in the Republic that Saturday.

The race is usually held in the Phoenix Park during the summer but with the expected road layout changes this year it has been moved to an open road race in Batterstown. The format has also changed. It will still have the familiar laps to be completed but this year a second race will be held (numbers permitting) for the S3/V/J/W categories with more prizes and ranking points up for grabs.
